Somebody on Bike Forums posted this silent movie from 1903 of urban cyclists going about their business. I love this little video because there are so many riders out, and a great many of them are women in ordinary dress for the time. Not bloomers, nothing specialized. Just the blouse and skirt a young woman would wear to a job, out errand running, or in casual sports.
Interesting to note, the first widely commercially available freewheel hub was brought to the market in 1898, but judging by the fact that you don’t see anyone coasting (everyone’s legs are pedalling) I surmise these cyclists are mostly riding fixed-gear. I’ve ridden with a few fixed-gear afficianados lately and have come to recognise the distinctive riding style of fixed-gear cycling.
