This morning, before I was halfway to work, my eyesight was partially obscured by an icicle formed by my own tears clinging to the lashes over my left eye. Luckily that’s my bad eye, so it didn’t foul me up too badly. By the time I got to work, it was a pea-sized lump of ice and I had to thaw it with my index finger somewhat before I could slide it off my eyelashes.
That, my friends, is COLD.
In my three years of year-round commuting, I have never had this happen to me before. Sure my eyes water madly from mid-September through mid-March. My glasses fog up all the time. I’ve had slung-back slush or falling sleet freeze to my glasses before. I’ve had my balaclava freeze where it was wet with my breath before. But never before have I actually had icicles form on my person. I think normally within that close of proximity to my body’s heat, ice doesn’t form, but today, there was a pretty good wind out of the west, and it was DAMN cold, and so the combination of factors was favorable to forming a tear-cycle over my left eye (the one that seems to water the worst).
Supposedly it’s going to warm up for the rest of the week and be in the mid-40s over the weekend, which is fine by me. Maybe I will finally get to do my Truman Rd. photo shoot. I think I will do one now when everything is all brown, gritty and wintery, and one in the spring when things green up and look a little more cheerful.
Ouch.
I thought about you today as I drove to work (no, I am not a stalker) as I was driving over I-670. I wondered if you rode your bike into work or hitched a ride with someone. You are hardcore.
I can sympothize with you a little bit. The heater in my truck has been broke so I end up freezing my arse off for my 35 min. commute from Blue Spring into KCK. I just sit in the truck, freeze, drink coffee and watch my breath….please let it be in the 40’s soon.
I could not belive you went out to Smithville in that weather…again, hardcore.
You have a great passion for life, it is to be admired.
We are in the middle of a winter where we’ve already used up our quota of snow up here, in NH. What I really want to know is where is global warming when I need it?
We’ve already had about 4.5 feet, and another 6-10 inches are due tomorrow. Blergh.
